Bedside Singers offer our voices in song to patients and their families at Victoria Hospice and also on the Inpatient Oncology-General Medicine unit in the Patient Care Centre at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC, Canada.
The intention of bedside singing is to reflect whatever emotional or spiritual energy people may need during the time that we spend with them.
Our volunteers are trained to continually adjust their singing according to verbal and physical cues that they receive from patients and families.
Because we allow the listener to lead what happens during our visits, bedside singing provides the kind of responsive support that isn't possible with recorded music.
Bedside singing is done a cappella (voices unaccompanied by instruments) and always in teams of only two singers.
Our core repertoire includes songs of comfort and general blessing, as well as some familiar songs from popular culture. This range allows us to offer a choice of either relaxing or upbeat songs during visits so that we can match the kind of support that is needed at any particular time by the patient or their family.
